School Counseling

Program Options

Loyola's School Counseling programs are designed to meet all stages of your professional life—whether you are entering the profession and learning the basics, or if you are an established counselor who wants to continue your education and advance your knowledge and skillset. Our students are prepared to effectively serve, lead, and be advocates for social justice and mental health in pre K-12 settings.

To meet the youth mental health crisis, we offer counselors the opportunity to not only become eligible for licensure as a school counselor, but also to meet the preparation requirements to become licensed as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in the state of Maryland. We invite you to explore our M.A. or M.Ed. program, or one of three post-master's options.

M.A. or M.Ed. in School Counseling

Loyola's M.A. and M.Ed. degrees in School Counseling both lead to certification as a school counselor. Our M.A. program is focused on preparing the research practitioner with the completion of a thesis seminar, while our M.Ed. program includes additional electives to deepen candidates' knowledge and skills as a counselor.

Master's Plus in School Counseling

Current school counselors may take the specific courses required by the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors to become a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC).

Certificate of Advanced Study in School Counseling

The Certificate in Advanced Study (CAS) program trains master's level school counselors who are interested in furthering their knowledge and skills in special areas of school counseling. One can specialize or generalize within the certificate program.

Continuing Education

1-credit, online, flexible option The Continuing Education option is for the working counselor who wants to sharpen their skills, earn credit hours to renew their certification, or receive clinical supervision to strengthen their skillset to meet the demands of the job. It's also for the licensed professional counselor who wants to receive supervision.
