Areas of Specialization
Areas of specialization include adult neurology specifically aphasia, traumatic brain injury, and dysphagia. In addition, Andrea has presented and published in the area of technology and applications for the adult neurology population. Clinical experience in acute care settings includes University of Pennsylvania, St. Agnes Hospital, Northwest Hospital, University of Maryland Medical Center and the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. Andrea has also worked in private practice for clients with aphasia and neurodegenerative diagnoses. Andrea’s pedagogical interests include interdisciplinary client care and developing shared treatment goals for improved quality of life.
Achievements (past 5 years)
- Full Clinical Teaching Professor (Spring 2023)
- IRB Approved Study: Team member of practicing speech-language pathology faculty members across nation who developed and piloted a survey to measure the impact of the Identity Theft experience on graduate students studying speech-language pathology. Developed a retrospective survey to capture students’ perceptions of the changes in their attitudes, skills and beliefs regarding emotional care and support for their clients with aphasia. Piloted during academic year 2020-21.
- Loyola Summer Grant (2019): Interprofessional Simulation lab with Notre Dame of Maryland University.
- Simulation lab/interdisciplinary/interuniversity collaboration with Notre Dame of Maryland University (NDMU), SLHS and PY LUM students (100+ students total) with a focus on medical SLP and exposure and education to an acute care setting (Fall 2023)
- Maryland Community Health Resources Commission Grant recipient (MDCHRC) (2020): Submitted proposals for grants, with oversight from LCC executive director to secure funding for telepractice.

About Andrea Atticks
Andrea has been practicing in the field for 20+ years and started at Loyola University
Maryland in 2006 as a clinical faculty member. Beginning in 2019, Andrea began serving
on the graduate director team as the division director for the speech-language hearing
sciences department. She works with first-year graduate students ensuring experience
in ASHA’s Big 9 areas through comprehensive and robust internship placements. Andrea
is also responsible for interdisciplinary programs, offsite placements for first-year
students, and program development at the Loyola Clinical Centers. Beginning in 2022,
Andrea worked with clinical faculty members to reopen a Voice Clinic at Belvedere
Sqaure. In addition to providing instrumental diagnostics (e.g. rigid and flexible
stroboscopy) with oversight and consultation with an otolaryngologist, Andrea has
worked to include and expand gender affirming voice services at the LCC. Starting
in 2019, Andrea worked collaboratively with nursing faculty at Notre Dame University
of Maryland to develop an interdisciplinary simulation lab for nursing and speech
language pathology students. This collaboration has grown to include a third discipline
— psychology. Andrea teaches Aphasiology and the Professional Practice Seminar (I
and II) in the graduate program. In Spring 2023, Andrea was promoted to full, teaching
clinical professor.
Outside of work, Andrea spends time with her husband (Kevins Atticks, Loyola Communication
Dept.), son and daughter. Andrea spends many hours on soccer fields cheering on her
son and time at track meets with her daughter.
