About Iota Iota Iota
Iota Iota Iota (Tri-Iota) is a National Women's Studies Honor Society with more than 80 chapters nationwide. Tri-Iota strives to maintain the feminist values central to Women's Studies and encourage diversity, egalitarianism, and a supportive academic environment for all students.
The purpose of Tri-Iota is to promote interest in Women's Studies, and research in social problems affecting all women. This society also encourages volunteerism, advocacy, and activism within the community as important methods for promoting and maintaining the feminist values central to Women's Studies.
The Alpha Chapter of Iota Iota Iota originated in 1992 at Metropolitan State University of Denver. The organizers selected the Greek letter, iota for the name, to represent the three goddesses Inanna, Ishtar, and Isis. Loyola University Maryland is the Gamma Upsilon Chapter of Tri-Iota, formed the spring of 2015.
Inanna, Ishtar, and Isis
Inanna was one of the primary deities of Sumer, a civilization that flourished from around 3500 BCE to 2500 BCE. She was known as the queen of the land, the source of the earth's life blood. According to some stories, she renewed her virginity each year by descending into the underworld. Mary Daly, who has reinterpreted many words referring to women, suggests that a virgin may be thought of as a wild, lusty, unsubdued woman.
Ishtar was the great goddess of Babylonia, a civilization located in the south of present-day Iraq from around 1800 to 1000 BCE. Ishtar - or Star - was the Light of the World, the Lawgiver, the Queen of all Men. Mary Daly might call her the Audacious Truthsayer: unafraid, naming the problems, boldly telling the Truth.
Isis was the primary goddess of ancient Egypt, beginning around 3000 BCE. Worship of Isis lasted well into the first millennium of the Christian Era, and many believe she became identified with Christianity's virgin mother Mary. Isis was the goddess from whom all else arose - the Creator, the Giver of Life, the Mother of All.
Iota Iota Iota (Tri-Iota) Membership at Loyola University Maryland
All Loyola students with an interest in gender, sexualities and women studies are invited to participate in Tri-iota activities. These may include speakers, films, activism, or other gatherings.
Honors in Minor Designation
Students who demonstrate a high level of commitment to the study of gender, sexualities or women's studies will be invited to apply for membership in the Gamma Upsilon Chapter of Tri-Iota.
Students who have a GPA of 3.0 or above (overall and in their WS courses), have successfully completed Introduction to Gender and Sexuality Studies (SC 210) or RAce, Class and Gender (SC 221) and at least one upper-level gender studies course, and have declared the gender studies minor, will be invited to be initiated into the Gamma Upsilon Chapter of Iota Iota Iota at Loyola University Maryland. Students must maintain their GPA to receive the honors designation upon graduation.
Prospective members must complete an application form and submit a one-time fee of $15 at initiation. That fee pays for meetings costs and the lavender cords that each honor society member may wear at graduation. (The fee may be waived if the program budget allows.)
