Loyola recognized nationally for environmental sustainability

Loyola University Maryland was named in The Princeton Review Guide to Green Colleges: 2023 Edition, which profiles the nation’s 455 most environmentally responsible schools. The guide recognizes schools based on their use of renewable energy, recycling and conservation programs, environmental studies opportunities for students, and career guidance for green jobs. 

“Our focus on sustainability is an important way we live out our mission at Loyola,” said Tracy Harvey, Ph.D., sustainability program director and co-chair of the sustainability committee at Loyola. “As a Jesuit institution, we understand our responsibility to care for our common home for current and future generations. That means reducing our impact on the environment as well as looking at the social, economic, and spiritual aspects of sustainability.” 

Loyola assembled the Sustainability Committee to lead the University’s efforts to care for the environment, including establishing a comprehensive climate action plan and green building and energy management policies. Loyola works reduce waste, grows an accredited arboretum and native gardens, and sponsors a local farmers market. In addition, students can earn Maryland’s first Bachelor of Business Administration in sustainability management and minor in environmental studies. 

The Princeton Review chose the schools in the Guide to Green Colleges based on surveys of administrators and students at 713 colleges during the 2021-22 academic year. Editors analyzed more than 25 survey data points to select the 455 schools for the guide. The Princeton Review also recognized Loyola among the nation’s top institutions for undergraduates in the Best 388 Colleges: 2023 Edition earlier this year.
