Introdution to Communication Disorders (SP 103)
This course is a survey of the disorders of speech, language, and hearing in pediatric, adolescent, and adult populations. The role of the speech-language pathologist and audiologist in the identification and treatment of individuals with these disorders is addressed. Students learn the professional vocabulary and concepts that are the foundation for advanced courses in the department.
Faculty biography
Dr. Brianne Roos teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences. She is a two-time graduate of Loyola (BA 2001, MS 2004) and then ventured down the road for a doctorate at Hopkins. She loves teaching, advising, and getting to know her students as they take advantage of Loyola's opportunities and discern next steps.
Speech and Language Development (SP 207)
This course covers typical speech and language development in children from birth through adolescence. Provides students with information regarding the phonological, morphological, semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic processes of normal speech and language development. Also explores specific acquisition sequences and the impact of social and cultural influences on communication development.
Faculty biography
Dr. Sara Cornett teaches courses on pediatric speech-language pathology service delivery at Loyola. This includes Speech and Language Development and Child and Adolescent Communication Disorders at the undergraduate level, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and Language Disorders in the Birth to Five Population at the graduate level. She is a practicing speech-language pathologist, trained in school-based and early intervention coaching and family-based services. She also conducts research on enhancing AAC services for children with and without disabilities, particularly in preschool classrooms where all children enter a formal learning space for the first time with a range of different abilities.
Mentor biography
Jessi Ceiri is an avid reader and fitness enthusiast. When she is not working as a program assistant in the Sociology and Psychology Departments, she is a personal trainer, group fitness instructor, yoga teacher and Thai body massage therapist. She has two bulldogs and lives in Carrol County with her boyfriend and three kids.
David Tiscione is the Director of Title IX and Bias Compliance. David serves as the Title IX Coordinator, the ADA/504 Coordinator, and coordinates the Student Bias-Related Behaviors Policy and process. David is an experienced restorative justice facilitator and infuses those philosophies into his work. David is passionate about preventing and addressing sexual and gender-based misconduct, preventing and addressing bias-related behaviors, and promoting equitable access to campus services.
