Messina Courses

Messina offers 67 unique course pairings for a student's first-year experience at Loyola. Most incoming students take Messina courses that satisfy their core curriculum requirements. However, some are major-specific and some are electives based off of student interest. The course pairing survey that was sent out in May allows students to further explore and select these options if they want.

A reminder that Messina is a two-semester experience with distinct classes each semester. Your fall class could be major-specific while your spring class could be core-specific. It will be rare that both of your Messina classes will be specific to your major. Our Messina program is designed that at least one of your two Messina classes will satisfy some core or major requirement.

More about the Core
A liberal arts education at Loyola University Maryland requires that students take courses in the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, and mathematics. These core courses, required of all students regardless of major, introduce students to these areas of study. Students in the Honors Program fulfill the University core requirements through an alternative core curriculum.

Academic Worksheets from the Academic Advising and Support Center as well as the Undergraduate Course Catalogue are available if you would like more detailed information about how Messina courses fit into your core requirements.
