Loyola at the Senator Night - Charm City

Loyola is sponsoring free shuttles and a free screening of this documentary that follows residents of the downtown Baltimore section on Rosebank Avenue on their daily lives, both their struggles and joys. Their stories are told in conjunction with the Baltimore Police's stories as they connect with neighbors in the area, keeping them safe and trying to maintain professional behaviors. After the movie, Alex Long will address questions and comments from students as they come to see a part of Baltimore that they only read about. Our students will hear about the happy moments and the frustrations of Alex and his neighbors. This event is an opportunity for our students to discern and discover the stereotypes that falsely inform their judgments and to see why community is so important. This event is also a chance for our students to experience our York Road community. There is also ample material available for follow-up discussions in enrichments about systematic injustices that haunt some neighborhoods and find ways to make meaningful changes now and in the future.

Please contact messina@loyola.edu with any questions.

Becoming Bulletproof

Join us for a movie night! Complete with popcorn, candy, and an opportunity. Becoming Bulletproof is a film about individuals with disabilities and able-bodied individuals who work together to make a movie. A film that will introduce you to a pretty amazing cast of individuals. A.J., the main character (who has cerebral palsy), clearly expresses what life is like with a disability—mainly through the lens of ability—and what he wishes to do with his life. His dreams mirror the dreams of people you know. The movie helps to create connections with people with disabilities as people with abilities, hopes, and aspirations "just like everybody else." This movie focuses on dignity and inclusion. Its message can apply to all human beings. A.J. Murray, one of the lead actors in the film, will be joining us for conversation via zoom after the movie. You don't want to miss this.

Phi Beta Kappa Keynote Speaker
As part of Phi Beta Kappa's ongoing visiting scholar program, Loyola will host Tammy Kernodle as she addresses topics in race, gender, and pop culture. This year's title is "All Rhythm but None of the Blues: Black Music, Black Women and the De-Mythologizing of Post-Racial America"

In the wake of Barack Obama's election in 2008, political pundits and cultural critics began declaring that the election of the first African American President was representative of America moving into a period of post-racialism. This notion of post-racialism was not simply based in political ideology, but also in the continuous globalization of black culture, especially black music. First through playlist and later through performances at the White House, Obama used music as a means of cultivating a form of nationalistic unity that was multi-ethnic, multi-racial, and intergenerational. On the surface, he had seemingly created a soundtrack for post-racial America. However, just as Obama prepared to launch his re-election campaign, a series of violent events began to undermine this notion of post-racialism. This resulted not only in the awakening of new social movements, but also new forms of protest culture. These presentation looks at four key events that occurred between 2012 and 2016 as a lens to understanding the current wave of protest and socially conscious music. It will specifically focus on the music and cultural responses of black women as a method of illuminating the long and varied history of black women musicians in shaping and promoting a public rhetoric of social change. Professor Kernodle is also the 2024-2025 Frank M. Updike Memorial Scholar.

Please register on the Bridge for more information and to guarantee you a seat at this event.
