Inclusive Dining
While we truly believe that ‘food is a universal language,’ we also realize and appreciate that food is deeply personal. It’s equally functional to fuel our bodies, as much as it is emotional for comforting our minds and fostering connections around the table.
It’s important to us that everyone feels welcome to our dining tables. Inclusivity around food takes on multiple forms. For our Parkhurst team, it’s focusing on a dining program that works to maximize access to food, consciously creating menus that ensure variety for any dietary restriction, allergy or ability and genuinely embracing different cultures and religions through cuisines, ingredients, and traditions.
We are actively working to expand our own knowledge of diverse dining needs by proactively and consistently listening to our guests and partners – working together around the dining table to develop programming, recipes, and calendars that embrace inclusion and foster pride for the campus community. These collaborations foster the most meaningful and authentic celebrations, both through the menu and the story around it.
Current Efforts:
- Expanding Training and Education - We conduct quarterly Diversity, Equity and Inclusion training to all our team members. We also educate our team members on upcoming non-traditional holidays such as Rosh Hashanah and Ramadan.
- Sourcing - We work with vendors from a variety of backgrounds such as Women Owned, Minority Owned and Certified LGBT Business Enterprises. Within our Know Your Source programs, we seek to partner with growers and producers within our operating region who share our passion for food, our commitment to excellence and who foster diversity and inclusion within their company and in their community.
- Supporting Food Insecurity Programs - We partner with CCSJ on donating excess packaged food to the York Road Community Fridge. We also work with the Maryland Food Bank and some local churches to donate excess food in the dining halls.
- Meeting with Students - We meet with students as well as student groups on campus to hear their feedback and work towards a common ground to meet their needs. If you have feedback, or want to set up a meeting, please reach out to our General Manager Corey Lauver
