Food Security
York Road Initiative works with residents to research and develop sustainable models for food access and security in the Govans area.
- Operate Govanstowne Farmers’ Market, providing affordable access to fresh produce and whole foods every summer since 2010
- 2013 Food Access Survey, a research project engaging 200 neighbors to learn their food needs
- Implement FreshCrate, a partnership between three, independent corner stores and Loyola’s Parkhurst Dining Services to provide competitively priced produce to address year-round food insecurity
- The Govans Community Fridge is an initiative started in June of 2022, which seeks to provide resources such as fresh produce, hygiene products, water, and more to York Road residents as well as Loyola students. Our phrase “take what you need, share what you can” is an embodiment of our vision of tying Loyola students to the greater Baltimore community. Our community fridge helps in creating equitable access to food which is one piece of York Road Initiative’s mission!
