Biography

Professor Jon Malis is a visual artist and academic with experience in photography, film, and digital media. He currently serves as the Chair of Visual and Performing Arts and is a tenured Professor of Visual Arts at Loyola University Maryland. Professor Malis holds an MFA in Film and Electronic Media from American University and a B.A. in Fine Art from The George Washington University.

Professor Malis has earned numerous awards, grants, and fellowships, including from the Maryland State Arts Council, District of Columbia Commission on the Arts & Humanities, Lumen Prize, the Naples Art Institute, and others.

His artistic practice and research have been showcased in a variety exhibitions and conferences worldwide, from locally in the DC/Baltimore region to international exhibitions and conferences throughout Europe. Current research interests include topics ranging from how technology influences the viewership of art and digital color theory, to the creative potential of AI in visual arts.

In addition to his academic roles, Professor Malis has a robust professional background, including prior careers in newspaper photojournalism, corporate visual storytelling and fine art digital printmaking.
