Study Abroad
Study abroad can be a wonderful addition to coursework in sociology. It gives you an opportunity to experience cultural differences, and many programs offer sociology coursework that engages with institutional structures specific to the home country. Gaining this type of comparative understanding will assist your efforts to pursue social justice and social change, as well as to work effectively in U.S. organizations.
The Loyola Sociology Department has pre-approved numerous courses at various levels of instruction in various programs. You can use the chart below to look for classes you want to take and also to ensure that a class you take abroad is not a replica of something you have already taken at Loyola. The chart is updated annually. Remember that your institution abroad will be adding courses on a regular basis that are not in the chart. If you see other interesting courses on your target university’s website that you would like to take, obtain the course description and a syllabus and provide them in electronic form to the Sociology Department Chair. If the syllabus does not include a list of readings, please compile one from the target university’s equivalent of our Moodle site or ask the instructor to provide one.
