"Autograph Books as Holocaust Objects"

During the Holocaust, Jews brought personal objects with them as they were deported to camps and ghettos; among these, Jewish girls brought "autograph books", small albums of blank pages intended for hte collection of poems and drawings by friends and acquaintances. This research analyzes several of these books to ask how they functioned inside spaces of persecution and what they meant to their owners.

Professor Elisabeth Anker (George Washington University), author of Ugly Freedoms, talked with Dr. Catriona Hanley’s PL*346 “Philosophy of Peace” class. She also gave a keynote talk entitled “Every Man a Sovereign: Violence and Power in America Now” that examines how American ideals of liberty have often justified violence and inequality while also inspiring new forms of resistance.
