Bunting Peace and Justice Publication Grant

The Bunting Peace and Justice Publication Grant supports faculty publications in the field of peace and justice. It can be used to reimburse faculty authors for the costs related to the publication of a book, article, or other form of publication (ex. exhibit) not covered by the publisher.

Eligible faculty:

All tenured, tenure-track, full-time teaching or clinical faculty, and emerita faculty at Loyola University Maryland are eligible to apply.

Eligible publications:

Publications must explore a topic or question promoting the knowledge of peace and justice. They must advance one or more of the following aims:

  • Understanding of the causes and consequences of violence, the systematic sources of injustice, and/or the inter-relationship of peace and justice
  • Disciplinary/interdisciplinary analysis of concrete cases of conflict
  • Analysis of mechanisms for resolving violent conflict as well as norms, practices, and institutions for building and sustaining peace
  • Application of conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and/or justice advocacy skills in interpersonal, institutional, societal, or global contexts
  • Development of theoretical or practical models for promoting peace and justice

The grant may be used to cover:

  • The cost of permissions not paid for by the press or the journal publishing the faculty member's work
  • Costs such as illustrations, reprint fees, editing, indexing, etc., for either an article or a book;
  • Other types of equivalent expenses involved in the publication of creative works in other media
  • Other reasonable expenses, given the summary above, necessary for the publication of a book, article, or work in another medium, if the cost is not one covered by the publisher. Faculty members who are uncertain whether their expenses qualify for reimbursement under this program should contact the director.

The grant ordinarily does not pay for:

  • Research, travel, or other expenses leading to publication.
  • Any form of publicity for the publication.
  • Costs incurred from publishing with pay-to-publish presses, the classification of which is at the discretion of the director or the steering committee.
  • Open-access for articles, unless there are special circumstances warranting the expense; this is at the discretion of the director or steering committee

Procedures:

Applicants requesting funding or reimbursement should submit a request to the Peace and Justice director, Dr. Heidi Shaker, by email to hsbrown@loyola.edu

The request should include:

  1. Eligible faculty status
  2. A detailed explanation of how the publication addresses at least one or more of the Peace and Justice learning aims.
  3. The amount and nature of the costs involved
  4. Any additional funding received for the publication
  5. Supporting documents, including a bill or receipt that shows the faculty member has paid the costs, as well as proof that the work has been accepted for publication.

Service component:

Faculty who receive reimbursement for publication costs are expected to present their work on campus. This may take the form of a Peace and Justice faculty lunch talk, etc.

Deadline:

Faculty may submit requests at any time during the year. Requests will be considered on a rolling basis (the steering committee meets monthly).
