2024 Chilean Tour

Santiago, Chile: March 2 - March 10, 2024
(tour has already concluded)

We invite you to join us for the 2024 Chilean Study tour. This nine-day study tour is an opportunity to combine your academic study with an immersion in South American culture. What makes this study tour unique is the ability for participants to interact with alumni from Loyola’s MBA program in Chile. Spend five nights in Santiago, the capital of Chile, and the last two nights of the tour in Viña del Mar, a beach resort near Santiago.

Tour Schedule

The study tour combines classroom learning, opportunities to meet and interact with Chilean Business executives, and cultural experiences. The highlight of the study tour is the site visit – an opportunity to visit multinational corporations as well as Chilean businesses and U.S. companies doing business in Chile. The site visit allows study tour participants an opportunity to have a dialogue with senior Chilean business executives. While the specific sites visited change from year to year, in prior tours, we have visited such sites as General Motors, Under Armour, PepsiCo, Tom James of Chile, Codelco (copper), Undurraga (wine), and Mutual de Seguridad.

The Chilean Study tour is, however, not limited to site visits. Students will have ample opportunity to immerse themselves in Chilean culture. On past study tours, we have taken a day tour into the Andes, toured Valparaiso (a port city), visited the Naval Museum, and gone to a winery. Students have also taken a bike tour of Santiago, hiked to a glacier in the Andes, attended a soccer match, visited a ski resort in the Andes, and visited Isla Negra (the home of Pablo Neruda, Chile’s Nobel prize winning author). The tour concludes with a visit to the beach in Viña del Mar.

Course Details and Requirements

Students may elect to enroll in either GB 779: International Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility or GB 748: International Marketing.  GB 748 counts as an elective course for the Marketing specialization and GB 779 counts as an elective course for the Management specialization.  Either elective counts toward the Interdisciplinary Business specialization.

In order to enroll in GB 748, students must either have successfully completed GB 702 prior to registration or enroll in GB 702 during the Fall 2023. There is no prerequisite for GB 779.  The elective course must be the only course in which the student is enrolled during 8W1 of the spring semester.

Students are required to attend all pre-trip classes, fulfill course requirements as required by the course syllabus, and attend all site visits.

Students are also required to meet all COVID protocols dictated by the Loyola University Office of International Programs as well as any requirements set forth by the Chilean government for international and domestic travel.

This fee does not include:

  • Tuition
  • Airfare
  • Expenses for passports
  • Health, accident, or travel insurance

Please note:

  • The price is subject to change due to currency fluctuations and airline fuel surcharges.
  • Equivalent substitutions may be made for company visits, hotels, and travel.
  • Students may elect a single surcharge for an additional $1150.
  • Students are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO PURCHASE TRAVEL INSURANCE

Why do we not include airfare?
We have chosen to exclude airfare from the program costs for several reasons:

First, it should save you money. The fares for groups are actually more expensive than single fares.  If you purchase your ticket as soon as you are notified that you are accepted into the study tour, you should be able to purchase tickets at a substantial discount over group fares. You are also free to use frequent flier miles if you have miles on American, Delta or United.

Second, in the event of a travel disruption due to weather or mechanical difficulties, it is much easier for one person to re-book as opposed to re-booking a group.  Again, for this reason, we highly recommend that you purchase travel insurance.

Last, when purchasing your airfare, plan to arrive no later than Sunday morning (March 3); we will have a class session that is mandatory on the evening of March 3.  However, we encourage you to arrange airfare to arrive in Santiago on Saturday, March 2 and hotel accommodations will be provided for Saturday night (March 2).  You may depart Santiago as soon as Saturday, March 10 or anytime thereafter if you wish to stay and explore more of Chile or South America.
