Our Sankofa Moment
Our COMloquium event came as a point of reflection. With the 4 year anniversary of
the Karson Institute's opening, and a year's anniversary since the opening of our
physical location in the Loyola Notre Dame Library, we took this moment as a time
to reflect on our past 4 years of work while moving towards even bigger goals.
Our day of work began early in the morning, offering hot cider, apple fritters and
cupcakes to students, staff and faculty going about their day. Among the giveaways
that morning were over 40 free copies of Freeman A. Hrabowski III's The Resilient
University, which students took quickly!
Later that evening, our COMloquium reception began. Throughout the reception room,
we displayed memorabilia from our previously hosted events, such as Itty Bitty Readers,
Stone Soup, our Grand Opening of the Karson's physical space, and more. Attendees
ate wild mushroom tarts, delicious spanakopita, and engaged in bright and lovely conversation.
On the way out of the reception, we passed out copies of our KI Annual Report for
the 2023-2024 academic year. See our Annual Reports in the Quick Links section to

Then began our COMloquium.
We took this chance to honor the work of our staff and director these last four years,
and to remind ourselves of the importance of the future we work for. We also took
this time to honor those who have been impactful to our trajectory, especially Reverend
Timothy Brown, SJ, who has been a long-time supporter and ally to the Karson. Father
Brown has donated much of his time, energy, and love to not only the Karson Institute,
but also to the world at large.
For this reason, and many ohers, we awarded Reverend Brown the Inaugural Karson Nix
Peace Award during the COMloquium. To see an incomplete list of Reverend Brown's accomplishments,

We had a lovely performance from Milton Javier Bravo, Ph.D., Vice President for Mission
and Identity and Jujuan Lawson, Senior Research Intern for the Karson performed an
oration of "The road less traveled" by Robert Frost.
