2023 Nachbahr Award

The Nachbahr Committee for the Center for the Humanities is pleased to award Dr. David Carey, Professor and Doehler Chair of History, this year’s Nachbahr Award, which recognizes outstanding scholarly achievement in the humanities. Dr. Carey, a historian of Latin America, is recognized for his prolific and ongoing scholarship that has been published in the most prestigious journals and presses. He has also been granted distinguished fellowships from eminent scholarly organizations, including the Guggenheim Foundation and the American Philosophical Society. The committee is particularly impressed by the clarity of his writing and the depth and breadth of his investigations into and explorations of the environment, public health, indigenous knowledge, and the challenges facing immigrants in the United States. In Dr. Carey’s case, the Nachbahr Award acknowledges both his significant scholarship and effective scholar-activism. His research has often spotlighted historical abuses in Central America, and he has also assisted many individuals through his work as an expert witness in asylum cases.

The Nachbahr Award annually recognizes exemplary achievement in scholarship or creative work by a faculty member in the humanities. It is named in honor of Bernard Nachbahr, a long-time and much-beloved philosophy professor at Loyola and the first director of the Center for the Humanities, which sponsors the award. The awardee delivers a public lecture, the Nachbahr Address, on the general theme of the life of the mind during the Center’s Celebrate the Humanities! event. This year’s event will take place Friday, September 29, starting at 3pm in the Fourth Floor Program Room. A public reception and private dinner after the lecture along with an honorarium also honor the recipient!
