Professor Peggy O’Neill, with co-author Professor Sandy Murphy (University of California Davis), published Assessing Writing to Support Learning: Turning Accountability Inside Out with Routledge Press in January 2023. The book examines classroom-based and large-scale writing assessment and the ways instructors can use assessment to promote learning. Written for writing instructors at all grade levels, it is grounded in research on writing teaching and learning.  Reviewers have praised the text for its thoroughness and accessibility.

Kathleen Blake Yancey, Kellogg W. Hunt Professor of English and Distinguished Research Professor at Florida State University, called it “essential reading” for anyone interested in writing assessment including “teachers, assessment practitioners, researchers and policymakers.” Chris Anson, Distinguished University Professor, Professor of English, and Director of the Campus Writing and Speaking Program at North Carolina State University, labeled it an “essential text for secondary and college writing instructors” that offers a “fresh perspective by examining the complexity of writing instruction, its history, and the effects of high stakes testing.”
