Biography

Mr. Joseph Musumeci has been a working professional in the theatre as a designer, manager, educator and consultant for a period spanning five different decades and two centuries. Mr. Musumeci has served as a production manager, facility manager, and designer of events and facilities for all sizes of performing arts organizations, including the Round House Theatre, Adventure Theatre, Flying V, Washington Shakespeare Company/Avant Bard Theatre, the Maryland Shakespeare Festival, the Source Theatre Company, the Olney Theatre Center, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, and many others. He has held teaching positions at Hood College, St. Mary's College of Maryland, the Lab School of Washington, and University of Maryland, College Park. Freelance clients include a gamut that runs from Theatre Conspiracy at the D.C. Arts Center, to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, to off-Broadway productions. Under the name of his company, ProScenia Design, Mr. Musumeci has designed facilities and systems for numerous clients, including Silver Spring Black Box Theatre, Avalon Performing Arts Studio at Hood College, and countless corporate shows and displays. He has also served as a guest teaching artist for numerous institutions, including Loyola University Mayland (The Dead, Antigone, On the Verge, The Marriage of Bette and Boo), Auburn University, Carroll Community College, Montgomery College, and Howard Community College. Mr. Musumeci is a member of United States Institute for Theatre Technology, Theatre Communications Group, American Association of Community Theatre, and International Organisation of Scenographers, Theatre Architects, and Technicians. He has been nominated three times for the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Set Design, and has received the Mary Goldwater Award and the Gilbert Hartke Award for his designs.
