The Greyhound Battalion

Montage of ROTC service, training, and ceremonies

Army ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) is one of the best leadership courses in the country and can be a part of your college curriculum.

Our mission is to recruit, educate, develop, and inspire the future generation of Commissioned Officers, and to develop citizens of character for a lifetime of commitment and service to the nation.

Learning to become a student-athlete-leader will make your college experience even richer and prepare you for the future. ROTC graduates go on to serve as Second Lieutenants either on Active Duty, the National Guard, or the Reserve.

Our ROTC program is amongst the first established in the nation in 1952 with a close-knit community of students, alumni, and legacy families. Our students have an extremely high academic success rate, strong professional job placement in their #1 job choice after graduation, and our team emphasizes and supports academic excellence first.

At the Greyhound Battalion, we are fully invested not only in student performance during college, but professional and personal success 20-years+ down the road. Feel free to reach out to us or drop by our offices.

Request Information

Please call or email us using the information in the Contact Us bar that is located on every page.

Our building locations are also marked using Google Maps. If you do not have a Loyola parking pass, please feel free to park next to our 300 Radnor (Main Office) building by taking Radnor Rd down from York Rd. You will not get a parking ticket in this ROTC parking lot.

ROTC and the military often use unusual terms and acronyms that make the process seem intimidating. Please come visit us if you ever have questions.

For Parents, Guardians, and Key Adult Figures

Please feel free to explore all of the tabs on our website. We have tailored as much information as possible to give you maximum candid transparency.

On the bottom of our Contact Us bar are some important links (green buttons) for ROTC National Scholarship applications, Army National Guard Scholarship applications, and Army Reserve Scholarship applications. Applications will need to submit several letters of recommendation, transcripts, test scores, and conduct a physical fitness assessment based on the conditions of the scholarship.

If you are a parent with a child approaching the end of their junior year of high school (11th grade), please apply for the National Scholarship before the start of their senior year, as it typically provides the highest monetary value and does not lock the applicant into a specific Army component (most flexibility for post-graduation career).

Do not self-select yourself out of the scholarship; it is possible and realistic for you. Please get your college tuition covered and graduate with a $0 balance.

The Monetary Value of a Four-Year ROTC Scholarship at Loyola University Maryland

At Loyola University Maryland, a four-year ROTC scholarship is worth approximately $351,400, and Loyola University Maryland covers 100% of room and board for ROTC scholarship students through endowed funds ($279,000 for tuition and all miscellaneous university fees, $50,400 for room and board, $16,800 for stipends, and $4,800 for book money).

The only charges not covered are a university meal plan and a parking pass, but students may apply their monthly stipend toward these costs if they choose. The ROTC stipend is a $420 monthly payment provided for 10 months each year, and students may use this money however they wish.

In total, if an ROTC scholarship student selected the most expensive meal plan and purchased parking passes during all authorized semesters, their uncovered cost of attendance would be approximately $12,600 over four years, or $3,150 annually. This figure is roughly consistent with Consumer Price Index–based estimates of grocery expenditures for an average college student in Maryland.

The Greyhound Battalion is unique amongst other ROTC programs in the nation, whom ordinarily only cover either tuition or room and board. Our program's scholarship Return on Investment (ROI) exceeds most ROTC programs nationally.

These are the general National Scholarship deadlines each year:

  • National Scholarship Early Application: June immediately after the junior year of high school.
  • Round 1 Acceptances: October of the senior year of high school.
  • Round 2 Acceptances: January of the senior year of high school.
  • Round 3 Acceptances: March of the senior year of high school.
  • Applications can be submitted as late as the beginning of March for Round 3 consideration, but you should submit them as soon as possible.

How do I navigate this website? It's so much information and ROTC terms are confusing.

First, please feel free to contact our team anytime, or drop by our offices anytime between 9AM and 5PM on Mondays through Fridays if you ever have any questions. We are happy to personally sit down with you and your family.

Next, we recommend reading the material on this website in the following sequence:

  1. New Students: This page provides an introduction to ROTC, if the ROTC path is right for you, the unique opportunities within the Greyhound Battalion ROTC program, and how to enroll.
  2. Scholarships: This page provides a detailed explanation of the scholarship and benefits process, and how to navigate the scholarship process to maximize monetary Return on Investment (ROI) for you.
  3. About ROTC: This page provides a description of the ROTC academic course structure, outlines the when the exact gates will occur where students will choose to sign legal documentation that obligates them for military service. Note that initial enrollment in ROTC incurs no obligations for military service, and students can freely enroll to try it out. Students will never be pulled out of college for military service during their time in college; this is a myth. This page also explains the Army Components and Branches, the jobs available to graduates after commissioning as an Army Officer.
  4. Forms: This page describes how to fill out military Adobe Reader .pdf forms and where to find forms necessary for enrollment.
  5. Special Academic Support: This page highlights how our ROTC students have special treatment for academic advising, tutoring, and support services to enable academic excellence. Greyhound Battalion ROTC students are mentored in the same manner as Division 1 college athletes.

Additionally, if you want to read about the unique background of the Greyhound Battalion and why it could be the right choice for you, we recommend the following materials:

  • Special Programs: This page describes unique internship and travel opportunities during summer breaks. On average, 50-60%+ of our total student population will volunteer to travel to these unique and fun experiences during each summer.
  • Alumni: This page highlights our people and how we value each Greyhound as part of our family.
  • History and Heraldry: This page provides information on the Greyhound Battalion, amongst the oldest ROTC programs in the nation.
  • Meet Us: Our doors are always open. Please feel free to contact any of us at any time.

Our motto is Strong Truths Well Lived!

On behalf of the Department of Military Science, welcome to the Greyhound Battalion family.
