Loyola student named Newman Civic Fellow
Nosa Omoregbee, ’25, a sociology student at Loyola University Maryland, was named a Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact. The Newman Civic Fellowship is a yearlong program that recognizes students who stand out for their leadership potential and commitment to creating positive change.
Omoregbee was a student intern in different roles at Loyola’s Center for Community, Service, and Justice, which partners with community organizations and provides academic courses, community development, scholarship, service experiences, and social justice programming. Omoregbee served as the center’s advocacy and civic engagement program coordinator, where she researched legislative bills and encouraged students to support them with advocacy campaigns, and service coordinator, where she connected students to volunteer opportunities.
“I have always had a passion for community service and activism, and since attending Loyola, this interest has blossomed,” Omoregbee said. “Through the center, I am learning how to locate the legal and legislative root of problems and make targeted efforts for solutions. I hope to further this experience and my love for service throughout my future career and life.”
In addition to her work at the Center for Community, Service, and Justice, she served as director of community outreach for Loyola’s Student Government Association. She also organized a youth forum at Loyola that included a panel of youth advocates and a community engagement fair. Omoregbee aspires to be a civil rights attorney.
“We are thrilled that Nosa was selected for this national high honor. Only one student per campus can be nominated by their university president, and Nosa’s demonstrated ability to advocate for social change that aligns with her values made her the perfect choice,” said Gia Grier McGinnis, Dr.PH., executive director of the Center for Community, Service, and Justice.
Campus Compact is a national coalition of colleges and universities committed to the public purposes of higher education. The coalition named students from 38 states, Washington, D.C., and Mexico who will form the 2024-2025 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows. The fellowship provides students with learning and networking opportunities to help them develop as civic leaders.
The cornerstone of the fellowship is the Annual Convening of Newman Civic Fellows, which offers intensive in-person skill-building and networking over three days. The fellowship also provides pathways to apply for exclusive opportunities, including mini-grants to help fund community projects, scholarships, and post-graduate opportunities.
“We are honored to recognize such an outstanding group of community-committed students,” said Campus Compact President Bobbie Laur. “One of the best parts of the Newman Civic Fellowships is the richness of students’ perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds — and how these varied stories all led to their passionate engagement with the social, political, and environmental issues impacting our world. These students will be the catalysts for change on many levels, and we are privileged to help empower them to create that change.”
