Sydney Pinkett, ’24, named 2022 Newman Civic Fellow

Sydney Pinkett, ’24, a sociology major with a minor in economics at Loyola University Maryland, was named a 2022 Civic Fellow by Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education.

“We are thrilled to know that Sydney will be representing Loyola as a member of this year’s Newman Civic Fellows cohort,” said Pat Cassidy, associate director of programs for the Center of Community, Service, and Justice (CCSJ). “Sydney has served as a model of student leadership in her work supporting literacy programming throughout the York Road Corridor at Govans Elementary School and Walter P. Carter Elementary Middle School. As a Baltimore native, Sydney continues to give herself to her community in ways that truly embodies a faith that does justice. We are excited to see how she will learn and grow from this experience and continue to make an impact in Baltimore.”

Pinkett, who lives in Baltimore, Md., is a logistics coordinator for York Road Schools in Loyola’s Center for Community, Service, and Justice. Throughout her internship, she works to place students and Loyola community members into volunteer opportunities along York Road. Alongside her internship with CCSJ, Pinkett is also a database research associate for One River Grants and the head of dance ministry and a media assistant at New Harvest Ministries in Baltimore. She has also gained valuable community service experience through serving as a writing workshop mentor for the U.S. Dream Academy and donating supplies for women shelters in Baltimore. Pinkett is one 173 students named as Newman Civic Fellows for 2022.

“Through this experience, I hope to grow my community of like-minded individuals who are focused on creating the change we all desire,” said Pinkett, who is the club head of the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship at Loyola. “While my focus area is health inequities and access to education, I hope to connect with others whose focus area differs from mine so we can have a greater impact in our individual communities and abroad"

About the Newman Civic Fellows Award:

The Newman Civic Fellowship is a yearlong program for students from Campus Compact member institutions. The students selected for the fellowship are leaders on their campuses who demonstrate a commitment to finding solutions for challenges facing communities locally, nationally, and internationally. Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides the students with a variety of learning and networking opportunities that emphasize personal, professional, and civic growth. Each year, fellows are invited to a national, in-person conference of Newman Civic Fellows and participate in numerous virtual training and networking opportunities. The fellowship also provides fellows with pathways to apply for exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities. The Newman Civic Fellowship was created in honor of Frank Newman, one of Campus Compact's founders and a tireless advocate for the role of higher education in preparing students for active and engaged citizenship. The Newman Civic Fellowship is supported by the KPMG Foundation and Newman’s Own Foundation.
