Loyola to celebrate Jesuit heritage and longstanding Maryland Day tradition during Mission Week

Loyola University Maryland will host Mission Week, a series of events and activities related to Loyola’s mission, to celebrate the University’s Jesuit and Maryland heritage from March 19 – 26.

Loyola will celebrate Maryland Day on Friday, March 25, honoring staff and administrators who have achieved key milestones for years working at the institution. 

Maryland Day Convocation

The Maryland Day Convocation will serve as the cornerstone of events and activities taking place during Mission Week.

This year's Convocation will feature Carrie Fox, ’01, founder and CEO of Mission Partners, a social impact communications agency and Certified B Corporation, and a nationally recognized leader in social impact communications. The Maryland Day Convocation will be held on Friday, March 25, at 2–3:30 p.m. in McGuire Hall. Fox will receive the University’s Ignatian Citizenship Award.

In her strategic communications work, Fox inspires individuals and organizations to lead with purpose and focuses on issues related to social justice, sustainability, children’s health, higher education, and workforce development.

Fox started her career as director of communications for Cal Ripken, Jr., a retired Orioles player, before moving into public affairs and purpose communications. Fox hosts a conversation series and podcast, Mission Forward, which has featured Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists, MacArthur Fellows, and some of the nation’s most sought- after philanthropy leaders. She also co-authored, Adventures in Kindness: 52 Awesome Adventures for Kids to Build a Better World, with her then 10-year-old daughter, Sophia.

While studying at Loyola she served as Student Government President. She has continued to stay connected to Loyola, as the lead designer and facilitator of the Loyola Social Impact Fellows program, and as a past member of the University’s Board of Trustees.

Saturday, March 19

An expungement clinic will be hosted by Loyola and Maryland Legal Aid from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in the parking lot of Loyola's Transportation and Public Safety complex at 5104 York Rd. Please contact Matt Beverlin at rmbeverlin@loyola.edu for more information.

Sunday, March 20

Celebrate the 400th Anniversary of the Canonization of St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Francis Xavier at 5 p.m. in the Alumni Memorial Chapel. Rev. John Savard, S.J., rector of the Jesuit community and lecturer in the School of Education, will preside over Mass. A vocation panel will also be held.

Monday, March 21

• The Mission Week Examen will be held in the Alumni Memorial Chapel at 3 p.m.
• Loyola welcomes Chris Wilson, author of Messina’s 2022-2023 Common Text, The Master Plan: My Journey from Life in Prison to a Life with Purpose, at 7 p.m. in Reitz Arena.

Tuesday, March 22

• A “Women in Jesuit Education Panel” will be held at 3 p.m. in the 4th Floor Program Room. Panelists include Rita Buettner, director of university communications, Paola Pascual Ferra, Ph.D., associate professor of communication, Afra Hersi, Ph.D., interim dean of the School of Education, Melissa Lees, director of the Women’s Center and sexual violence prevention, education, and response coordinator, and Amy Wolfson, Ph.D., professor of psychology.
• Joelle Hernandez, ’14, will speak at the Green & Grey Speaker Event, which will be held at 6 p.m. in the 4th Floor Program Room.

Wednesday, March 23

• Assessing Mission Priority Examen will be held from 10-11:30 a.m. in the 4th Floor Program Room.
• Men’s Tennis will take on Coppin State at 3 p.m. at the McClure Tennis Center
• A Festival Sing Evening will be held at 7 p.m. in the Alumni Memorial Chapel and via livestream.

Thursday, March 24

• The Campus Ministry Café honors Magis Mentors from 9-10 a.m. in Cohn Hall 100.
• Loyola will host a Greyhounds Give campaign.
• A St. Francis Xavier presentation with Rev. Charles Borges, S.J., will be held at 3 p.m. in Cohn Hall 133.
• A Bunting Peace and Justice Speaker Series, Claudio Saunt, "Unworthy Republic: A History of Indian Removal, Mass Deportation, and American Exceptionalism,” will be held at 7 p.m. in the 4th Floor Program Room.

Friday, March 25: Maryland Day

• A Milestone breakfast for faculty, staff, and administrators will be held at 9 a.m. in the 4th Floor Program Room. The event is invitation only. 
• Maryland Day Mass will be held at 12:10 p.m. in the Alumni Memorial Chapel.

Saturday, March 26

• A York Road Community Day will be held at 5104 York Road from 9:30-12:30 p.m. Sign up at yricommercial@loyola.edu.
• Mission Week will conclude with a lacrosse double-header event. The men’s lacrosse team will take on Army West Point at 1 p.m. and the women’s lacrosse team will play Boston University at 4 p.m. at the Ridley Athletic Complex.

Sunday, March 27

• The week will conclude with a “Roots of Refuge” service. Rev. Scott Adams, assistant director of Campus Ministry, will preside. The event will be held at 3 p.m. in the Alumni Memorial Chapel.

In addition, each afternoon LoyolaVotes will host daily advocacy events on the Academic Quadrangle.
