Founders' Forum - Ignatius and Islam: Uncovering Interfaith Intersections
The Founders’ Forum is an annual Mission Week event that explores our Jesuit and Ignatian roots in conversation with contemporary issues and subjects. This year's gathering will focus on St. Ignatius' enduring fascination with Muslims and the meaningful and timely parallels that can be drawn between Islam and Christianity. Father Steve Spahn, S.J., of the Jesuit community and Theology Department will sketch what we know historically of Ignatius’s desire to minister among Muslims. Dr. Jordan Denari Duffner, scholar of Muslim-Christian relations, interreligious dialogue, and Islamophobia, will highlight fascinating intersections between Ignatian and Islamic spirituality. The Land Remembers: Landscape and Jesuit Slaveholding in Maryland
This lecture examines the complex historical legacy of Jesuit slaveholding in Maryland
and how specific geographical and cultural landscapes connected to the enslaved carry
forward traces of this violent past. By centering the land itself as both witness
and participant in these histories, our panelists reveal how physical spaces can inform
contemporary discussions about institutional accountability and the ongoing relationship
between Jesuit institutions and the communities whose ancestors were enslaved by them.
A reception and opening of the exhibit Reckoning and Renewal: Confronting Slavery
and Its Legacies at Loyola University Maryland will follow in the Loyola Notre Dame
Library Gallery. Funding for this event provided in part by the MD Two Fifty Commission.
Register here for the lecture and reception.
