A Brief Measure of Personality
The researcher seeks to demonstrate the reliability and validity of the Brief Measure of Dysfunctional Personality (BMDP), a new measure created by Piedmont (in press) and the Numinous Assessment Group research team. Participants will complete, and will ask two individuals who know them well to complete, the BMDP and the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5; American Psychological Association, 2013; Wright & Simms, 2014); the 50-item, International Personality Item Pool (IPIP-50), Goldberg’s (1992) measure of normal personality; the General Assessment of Temperament (GAT), a 5-item measure designed to provide a more global assessment of the individual’s standing on each of the five factors; the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS; Neff, 2003); the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS; Smith, et al., 2008); and the Personal Problems Checklist for Adults (PPCA; Schinka, 1985; Piedmont, Sherman, & Barrickman, 2000). Correlation between the self-completed and observer-rated forms of the BMDP assessment will establish the reliability of the instrument. Correlation between the BMDP and the other measures of personality, along with incremental predictive power of the BMDP over the measures that assess normal levels of these personality qualities, will demonstrate validity. The BMDP, once validated, will allow clinicians to more easily recognize and help clients with a variety of personality concerns and dysfunctions.
