Trees of Loyola
Loyola University Maryland has a long history with the trees on our campus. An inventory conducted at Loyola University Maryland nearly 20 years ago identified 359 trees on the 59-acre main campus. In 1997, when the University purchased a 19.5 acre property just north of campus, a subsequent inventory and assessment of the new property added an additional 350 trees. By the end of 1997, Loyola University Maryland’s campus totaled 79 acres and had more than 700 mature trees.
Since 1999, the year we began establishing our plan to become an arboretum, Loyola has planted 1650 new trees. Our current tree inventory exceeds 2,200 trees and represents at least 110 different varieties, including 33 native species.
