Background
The Loyola-Bangkok Program is one of Loyola University Maryland's oldest international study abroad locations. All classes are conducted in English and held the of Mahidol University International College (MUIC). The Pacific Rim generally, and Thailand particularly, is rich with history and culture. Thailand is a constitutional monarchy headed by a civilian government. The Kingdom of Thailand became the first Asian country to establish diplomatic relations with the United States of America in 1833. The United States Embassy in Bangkok is one of the largest U.S. diplomatic consulates in the world. The United States, after Japan and China, is Thailand's third largest bilateral trading partner. Later in 1888, Mahidol University was established and is now ranked top three Universities in Thailand.
Loyola students choosing to study at MUIC will be enrolled through TEAN-The Educations Abroad Network and will study at Mahidol International college where all courses offered are conducted in English. The University is in Salaya, Nakhon Pathum city, approximately 25 miles from Bangkok. Loyola University students choosing to study at MUIC will also be enrolled in three units taught by a Loyola University professor.
Choosing When to Study in Bangkok
This program is a Fall only program
Departure takes place the first week of September until mid-December. The application timeline to study in fall take place from January to May.
Students should plan arrival to Bangkok in early September with a week long orientation. Courses typically begin the following week and end mid-December.
Academics
- All courses are taught in English.
- Prior knowledge of Thai is not required.
- Similar class style, comparable to Loyola.
- Classes are mixed with international students from around the world.

*All grades from abroad are transferred and calculated into your Loyola GPA; no courses can be taken as pass/fail.

On-site Support
Students will be supported by our full-time director, Elizabeth Kennedy who is a Loyola University Professor of Law & Social Responsibility in the Sellinger School of Business. Elizabeth not only works with our students on all aspects of their study abroad experience (questions, concerns, illnesses, travel, and homestays) but also teaches a course for our students to take. Elizabeth Kennedy will help students get acclimated to their new surroundings and direct them to the appropriate personnel or office that can assist them with any questions they may have.
Course Information
Students will take 5 courses in total:
- 4 courses will be from MUIC
- The 5th course will be a Loyola professor taught course
Students will enroll in courses approximately 2-3 weeks prior to departure and will have the opportunity to make changes during the add/drop period once onsite.

Housing
Students live in the Bundit House. This apartment style housing is located nearby to Bangkok and a shuttle runs every 30 minutes for students to get to campus.

Cost
Loyola financial aid applies and students are eligible for consideration for all forms of federal, state, institutional and private sources of aid except the Federal Work Study Program. Students studying abroad for either a semester or full academic year will forfeit the value of a Federal Work-Study assignment for the semester/s that they go abroad. If the student qualifies for federal work study, they can use the award for the semester they are on campus during their abroad year.

Insurance
Medical insurance is provided for all students during the program term by Loyola University Maryland through Chubb Insurance. This insurance coverage includes medical evacuation and repatriation, as well as 24-hour support services for medical issues. This insurance functions as a primary insurance while abroad.
Students are required to submit a copy of their U.S. health insurance card/policy. Please be sure not to cancel your US insurance policy while abroad since the provided insurances only function while on program and outside of the US.
Money and Banking
Once accepted into the program, students must call their bank and credit card carriers to tell them that they will be abroad for the semester. Students should carry debit or credit cards with them. Both Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted forms of payment, Discover and AmEx are less commonly accepted.
Visa
All students are required to apply for an “ED” non-immigrant visa. Students can apply for their visa once required documents are received from the university in Thailand. The application is done completely online, and students don’t need to mail their important documents to a consulate or Embassy.
- Fall semester visa application will start in late July
Students cannot apply for the visa until they receive the required documents from the Program Manager. Once documents are received from the university in Thailand, Program Manager will email the documents to the students along with step-by-step instructions. The application is done entirely online, and visas are typically granted within 2 – 3 weeks of applying. The cost is approximately $80 USD for a single entry. Students can apply for multiple entry in Thailand for an additional fee.

Criteria for Applying
Application Requirements
Students must submit an online application AND a Course Planning form by 11:59 pm on the first Wednesday after Thanksgiving break of their sophomore year to study abroad in the fall or spring term of junior year.
- Attend a Study Abroad 101 information session.
- Declare a major before applying to the study abroad program.
- Discuss with your major advisor the possible courses you could take abroad and see if there are any potential problems, he/she sees with your plans to study abroad; Students cannot be on disciplinary probation nor have a history of serious disciplinary problems.
Criteria for Acceptance
- Minimum cumulative CQPA average of 2.750.
- Students who can find courses which fit their Loyola program and allow full-time participation and who are neither on disciplinary probation nor have a history of serious disciplinary problems.
- ROTC candidates can apply as freshman to study abroad in the spring of their sophomore year.
- An academic interview with the program coordinator at Loyola University Maryland is required.
