Conducting a Holistic Search

An successful job or internship search incorporates multiple approaches to yield the best results. Only a percentage of jobs are ever even posted online, so limiting yourself to one source and one strategy is often not effective. Uses these strategies to expand your search:

  • Incorporate people into your search! Let everyone know what you are looking for so they can share opportunities. Ask others in your field how they found their jobs or for their most useful career sites. Conduct an informational interview with someone at a company you are interested in (you can find someone on LinkedIn).
  • Use targeted and industry-specific job search engines. Professional associations are often a good source, as are our career resources by major, but do some research on the best sources for the type of work you want to do or the type of employer where you want to work.
  • Go directly to companies where you want to work. Some might only post openings on their own page. On LinkedIn, you can follow the company page and set up a job alert.

Finding Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Focused Employers

If working for an employer who values Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is a priority, be sure to do your research. Explore company websites for their mission, corporate values, and if they have any DEI initiatives in place. Investigate if they have an office or staff members focused on DEI issues and if they offer identity-based employee resource or affinity groups. You can also do a deeper dive into their social media or donations. Reference this guide on Assessing a Company's Committment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging.

One of the best ways to get a sense of the culture and commitment to DEI in action within an organization is to reach out to current employees on LinkedIn by searching the company name and clicking the tab to see the people who work there – you might even see another Greyhound!
