Master of Theological Studies

The Loyola University Maryland Master of Theological Studies is a rigorous, 48 credit, graduate-level program designed to give students a broad exposure to the Christian tradition and an in-depth exploration of a variety of theological specialties, including liberation and comparative theologies. The Master of Theological Studies is excellent preparation for work in fields such as faith-based non-profit work, secondary theological education, campus ministry, law, social work, and higher education.

Program Options

Master of Theological Studies - General Track

The MTS - General Track is a 48-credit graduate-level degree with a highly flexible curriculum in order to meet students’ various professional and education goals. The curriculum includes:

  • seven core theology courses
  • five elective courses
  • two research language courses (typically Greek, Latin, or Hebrew)
  • a capstone course on Doing Lived Theology
  • and a one-semester thesis

Master of Theological Studies - Research Track

The MTS - Research Track is a 48-credit graduate-level degree that is designed specifically for students who intend on pursuing doctoral-level work upon completing the program. The curriculum includes:

  • seven core theology courses
  • three elective courses
  • four research language courses (typically Greek, Latin, or Hebrew)
  • and a two-semester thesis

Master of Theological Studies - Education Concentration

The MTS - Education Concentration is a 48-credit graduate-level degree that is designed specifically for people interested in or actively pursuing careers in theological education, bringing together core theological knowledge with practical courses in education.  The MTS - Education Concentration curriculum includes:

  • seven core courses
  • four elective courses
  • four courses within Loyola’s School of Education
  • and a capstone course on Ignatian Pedagogy

Program Format

The two tracks and the concentration are available to full-time or part-time students. Full-time students may complete the program in as little as two years. Part-time students typically complete the program in three to four years but may take up to six years to complete the program. Below is the typical course sequence for a student enrolled full-time.

Faculty and Learning Environment

Students learn from internationally recognized, tenured faculty known for their scholarly work and publications. The department includes Catholic and non-Catholic faculty who together nurture a collegial atmosphere and student success. Graduate-level students in the Master of Theological Studies and the Certificate in Theology and Ministry also experience a 2:1 student to faculty ratio, which provides a collaborative atmosphere.
