Undergraduate Curriculum
The Forensic Science Department offers a B.S. and B.A. in Forensic Science. Students in either degree can pursue coursework focused on:
- recognition, collection and analysis of forensic evidence;
- understanding why people are victims of crime or commit crimes;
- explore issues of criminal justice and reform in policing and the justice system;
- and examine the relationships between forensic science, law enforcement, and the judicial system.
Through coursework and high impact reality experiences (e.g., internships, research experiences, simulations, and independent studies), students develop a foundation for careers in crime scene and death investigation, forensic medicine, latent prints, firearms and toolmark analysis, criminal justice, criminology, forensic psychology, and related forensic disciplines.
The B.S. in Forensic Science provides concentrated coursework from seven natural and applied science departments, preparing students for careers in forensic laboratories, crime scene investigation, and an array of career paths dependent on a solid foundation in the sciences.
The B.A. pathway is interdisciplinary in design so that students with broad interests can explore coursework and training relevant to a wide range of career paths, especially those focused on criminology, criminal justice, and criminal psychology.
The Forensic Science majors and minor are excellent pathways leading to graduate and professional schools, with several of our graduates gaining acceptance into medical school, Physician's Assistant programs, Clinical Psychology, Criminal Justice, and Forensic Science Master's programs, including Loyola's M.S. in Forensic Pattern Analysis and M.S. in Biological Forensics programs.
The Forensic Science major is an interdisciplinary program with involvement from 16 departments:
