Comprehensive Child Social Skills and Parenting Groups
The Loyola Clinical Centers (LCC) offers comprehensive social skills training for young people ages 5-17. Group sessions, which typically last an hour per week for a series of 8 to 10 weeks, provide youth with an engaging, lively, and supportive social environment in which to master essential daily social skills. Group members learn through fun skill building activities and games, as well as role-play and direct skill instruction. Group topics are customized to each group based on the client needs, which are identified through group screening and intake process.
Examples of group topics include:
- Meeting and greeting people
- Initiating and maintaining conversations
- Solving and negotiating problems
- Compromising and being flexible
- Managing teasing and bullying
- Managing emotions and stress within self
- Working on a team and building leadership skills
- Reading nonverbal communication
- Turn-taking and other social norms for video conferencing
An interprofessional team of speech and psychology graduate students runs most groups, and all of them are supervised by at least one licensed professional faculty member. Groups are offered in the fall, spring, and summer.
